Bowel cancer

Low carbohydrate diets increase risk of bowel cancer

As you know we are always being told to eat a balanced diet of good food for good health and sometimes get fed up hearing about it, but there really is proof that this information really is beneficial for our good health, whatever our age.

Did you know that diets that are low in carbohydrates, like the popular Atkins diet could increase your risk of bowel cancer?

I find this quite alarming as several of my friends have used this diet.

Bowel cancer

Bowel cancer is a subject very close to my heart as my father was diagnosed with bowel cancer twice, the second unfortunately being fatal. Even so as a family we consider ourselves very lucky, as there was a gap of seventeen years between the bouts.

Nowadays there is not such a great taboo over bowel cancer, thanks to famous people in the media speaking out about their symptoms, the general public are more aware and prepared to talk about it and seek medical attention much sooner.

When my father had bowel cancer the first time in 1980 the word cancer was never mentioned at home, it was always glossed over and his stomach problems was the only mention of his illness, but on its reoccurrence in the nineties there was a much more openness to the cancer disease and even more so today, thank goodness.

It is now known that one of the factors of bowel cancer is a poor diet, and in today’s society of us all wanting to be ever slimmer, several different diet fads have taken off all over the world.

Researchers have found a link between eating a low carbohydrate diet and lower levels of the cancer fighting acid that is in the gut called butyrate. The chemical butyrate is produced by bacteria and helps to kill off cancerous cells.

Scientists found that by eating a low carbohydrate diet it can cause a fourfold reduction in the cancer fighting butyrate bacteria, and have said in the long run it is possible that these diets could contribute to bowel cancer.

The Atkins diet has been immensely popular worldwide with celebrities swearing by it to stay slim. However critics believe there are several potential risks with a diet regime that calls for such drastic cuts in carbohydrates, and has also been linked to heart disease and osteoporosis.

On this study, obese men were put on one of three different diets, eating either a low, medium or high level of carbohydrate.

The men on the high-carb regime consumed 400g of carbohydrate a day, which is the same as an average diet. Those on the low-carb diet only consumed 24g a day, this being equivalent to starting the Atkins diet.

It was this group, the low-carbohydrate diet that had a fourfold drop in the level of cancer fighting bacteria in their stomachs. Professor Flint said the changes in butyrate production that we observed in this study are the largest ever reported in a human dietary trial. He also said that it was likely the results would be exactly the same in women.

I believe we should all eat a varied diet of good food to maintain good health, and even when trying to lose weight should still continue eating a good balanced diet.

Good Food really is beneficial for continuous good health and should be a priority for all of us. Eating a healthy diet has become the golden rule in our house “good food good health”, and even our children recognise the benefits now they are older, although it was difficult to maintain at times.

Annie Anderson, nutritional adviser to the Bowel Cancer UK charity, said there is little merit in low carbohydrate diets, apart from the fact that they can help people to lose weight. Cutting down long term on fruits and fibre- for example in bread, as this report shows doing so is likely to have a negative impact on your bowel health and may increase the risk of bowel cancer.

Previous studies have blamed the Atkins diet for causing constipation through the lack of fibre eaten during the diet, which can raise the risk of bowel cancer.

community trust credit union

This is caused through the lack of fibre, meaning that the food moves much more slowly through the gut.

The Atkins diet is based on the theory that cutting carbohydrates changes the body chemistry, turning it from a carbohydrate burning machine in to one that burns fat instead.

This low-carb diet craze became popular in the 1990’s when Dr Robert Atkins wrote and published his book Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution, and still is one of the top ten diets used today.

Scientists and medical professionals say that bowel cancer is on the rise and fear that this diet could have an input on this, but with greater awareness of the disease and early detection, more people are surviving.

So remember, all foods can be eaten in a small amount or as a treat, and some should be treated only as that and that continuously eating one type of food can only do us harm. So why not make our “good food good health” slogan yours as well, and put it into practice next time you are in the supermarket.

Now is a great time of year for local fresh produce, you will be surprised how much fresher fruit and vegetables are at you local farm shop, and better for the environment with less carbon trail and packaging. I am a great believer that we should all eat a balanced diet, to keep our bodies in tiptop condition.

We all know that bowel cancer is on the increase in the UK, but lets get our diets right and give ourselves a greater fighting chance to keep bowel cancer at bay.

Do not forget good food is good health

Paul Rodgers asked:

The most common cause of liver disease is excess alcohol. Aside from consuming alcohol, learn which other factors – such as obesity and malnutrition – can play a role in developing this potentially life-threatening liver disease. Accumulated toxins in the body place a constant drag on the immune system, setting the stage for auto immune diseases and cancer. Once the liver is damage, it’s very difficult to maintain healthy defense system to combat diseases.

Milk Thistle

Milk Thistle is an example of a potent standardized herb that contains a minimum of 80% silymarin, the active nutrient that gives milk thistle its great effectiveness for the treatment of liver hepatitis or liver disease cirrhosis. Milk Thistle (Silybum maianum) seeds are approved as a natural treatment for damaged liver, inflammatory liver pain conditions and liver diseases such as cirrhosis, hepatitis, and fatty liver disease caused by alcohol and other toxins.

Furthermore, according the recent clinical research in Germany, the seeds of milk thistle help avoid liver disease and make an excellent tonic for the liver and gall bladder. Physicians have prescribed milk thistle, one of the best herbs for liver disease, for hepatitis treatment to keep down inflammation, for cirrhosis treatment to soften the liver, for liver cancer to aid in liver detoxification, and for many dysfunctions of the gall bladder system.

Dandelion

Dandelion has also been used to treat poor digestion, water retention, and diseases of the liver such as alcohol hepatitis. Many herbalists view the dandelion as an effective treatment for liver disease, even in extreme cases such as liver disease cirrhosis. It protects against free radical damage because it is a strong liver antioxidant, reduces inflammation and protects liver from alcohol liver disease, liver cancer pain, and a number of toxic compounds. It’s best herbal remedy and natural medicine for upset liver, liver pain relief and liver disorder against alcoholic and non-alcoholic liver disease.

Antioxidants

Studies have led the way in understanding how various antioxidants have the potential to prevent or treat the damage associated with free radical induced oxidative stress. Antioxidants not only help the liver carry out its cleansing processes, but they also serve to protect the liver from excessive free radical damage.

The high levels of antioxidants in a high quality green food are the front line of defence in the war on destructive free radicals that will destroy cells ability to repair, renew, and rejuvenate.

Fruits and vegetables contain a wide variety of nutrients, including antioxidants, phytochemicals, and carotenoids, that can be beneficial to both general health and liver health.

Spinach, tomatoes, and beets contain antioxidants, B vitamins, and carotenoids that enhance the efficiency of Phase I detoxification.

Garlic contains methionine, which is necessary for detoxification, and also contains selenium, which is an antioxidant that plays a role in Phase I detoxification.

The antioxidant activity of beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium is also recommended. Improving your diet and exercise is a DEFINITE must for long-term health.

Exercise

Exercise stimulates blood circulation and when blood circulates better, all organs function better. Exercise keeps your body and liver strong and better able to defend itself against viruses, disease, and pollutants. Not only does exercise reduce the amount of blood sugar, but it also increases blood circulation to all parts of the body, including the brain.

Stretching and deep breathing exercises early in the morning provide the most benefit for anyone with sluggish liver. Early morning exercises help to bring the blood out of the liver into the circulating system. The benefits of a regular exercise routine are proven and plentiful, including lowering the risk of heart disease, increasing energy levels, lowering both high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and combating depression.

Conclusion

Maintaining liver health is integral to healthy living. It is essential for body maintenance and regeneration. Liver health is the result of a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and supplementing with at least the antioxidant nutrients to decrease the toxic burden the liver has to deal with each day. Since the liver is the chief detoxification organ in the body, maintaining liver health is very important for everyone. Maintaining liver health is integral to healthy living. It is essential for body maintenance and regeneration. Find out more about Antioxidants and Liver cleansing processes.

Paul Rodgers asked:

Liver health is about good living –- healthy body, mind and lifestyle – and through living right, not only will you have a healthier liver but better overall health as well. Our environment and our food selections bring much toxicity into our bodies; but for those people in transition, and expecially for those who are using or have used drug-type hormones, liver health is of great concern. Maintaining liver health is of vital importance for good digestion, regular elimination, and hormone balance.

Liver Health

During our lifetime, we are exposed to preservatives, pesticides and other chemicals that may burden the liver. If the liver becomes overwhelmed, the body is less able to breakdown and excrete toxins, and this can have a negative overall effect. Liver health is not always easy to assess because satisfactory liver results can sometimes be obtained even when the liver is being severely challenged. Liver damage can sometimes be occurring even when you feel well, especially if you have hepatitis C for more than 20 years.

community trust credit union

Liver dysfunction occurs as part of the aging process. Liver dysfunction occurs from disease, diabetes being the most common. Liver health is often severely affected by alcohol and drug abuse and the liver may also be damaged as a side effect of some drugs or treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. Liver failure, which can occur suddenly or gradually, may lead to severe bleeding abnormalities, brain dysfunction, and – in extreme cases – even coma and death.

Liver Dysfunction Symptoms

Unfortunately, many people remain largely free of symptoms for years, often until the process is highly advanced. As the disease progresses, more pronounced symptoms may develop. Once the first warning signs do appear, the mild, flu-like symptoms characteristic of the early stages of the disease may not be recognized as symptoms of a deadly disease. Some may experience only fatigue and headaches, symptoms common to many other imbalances that don’t necessarily indicate that something is wrong with the liver.

Other symptoms include a sour taste in themouth, swallowing difficulties, upset stomach and even coughing andhoarseness. It is important to note here that if you have a history of symptoms associated with the liver, or if you have indulged in alcohol, drugs, poor nutrition, or other liver stressors for more than ten years, a total program for liver health is for you. If symptoms persist, it is always wise to consult your doctor to prevent further complications.

Liver Cleansing

In order to maintain good health, it’s recommended that you aim to complete a liver cleansing program every six months. Whole body cleansing is the very important part of healing of the liver disorders, and especially early cirrhosis. When the body is internally clean and in chemical balance, there’s no need for these cleansing reactions, which explains why some people suffer from frequent colds and flus and others do not. This liver cleansing health supplement, a part of natural liver diets and detox, contains the best & effective vitamins & safe natural herbs to maintain healthy liver and healing.

Remedies

Simple remedies such as dandelion, yellow dock, chicory, milk thistle, and nettle aid the liver and are safe to use. To ensure you receive optimum results it is important to take natural remedies as directed and remain consistent. Herbs, supplements, acupuncture and other remedies can help alleviate the worst symptoms of gallstones, such as fatigue, pain, and heaviness in the liver area after fatty meals, indigestion and other physical discomforts. Rigorous medical studies suggest that some of these remedies can also address the underlying disease process, bolster the immune system, retard liver damage, and help your blood-test values to within normal limits.

At Native Remedies, you will find the highest quality natural medicine for your health, professionally formulated in therapeutic dosages by a leading clinical psychologist for her own patients over the last 15 years. At Native Remedies, we recognize the vital importance of liver health – for quality of life and wellbeing, as well as for maintaining the important liver functions of detoxification and protection via healthy immune systems.

Native Remedies’ products are created using our Full Spectrum Approach™ (FSA), a set of standards and processes that combines the best quality, laboratory-tested, raw ingredients, good manufacturing practices and a Full Spectrum manufacturing method to guarantee you products of the highest quality, safety and effectiveness.

Conclusion

A zillion times more complex than a satellite space station, the liver is the body’s internal power plant, converter, engine, and refinery performing thousands of complex functions non-stop 24/7 keeping us alive, alert and healthy.

Paul Rodgers asked:

The liver is a complex organ that works 24 hours a day and performs hundreds of specific functions in the body. More than 500 body functions have been identified with the liver, including system cleansing and detox, the breakdown and metabolism of dietary fat and sugars, production of certain plasma proteins and cholesterol, storage of iron, removal of poisons, drugs and bacteria from the blood, the regulation of blood clotting and the maintenance of a healthy immune system.

Liver

Because the liver is responsible for metabolizing nutrients, hormones and by-products, it’s exposed to everything we eat, drink and breathe. Liver health is essential for optimal enzyme production and youthful energy. Not checking your liver health regularly can lead to missing opportunities to consider treatment if your liver health is deteriorating.

Liver cancer is the sixth most diagnosed cancer in the world and is much more common in people who have chronic viral infections of the liver such as Hepatitis B or C. Millions of Americans have liver disease and don’t even know it. In fact, liver disease is one of the top ten causes of death in the United States, even though many forms of liver disease are preventable and many more, if detected early, can be treated effectively.

Healthy Liver

Protect and nourish your liver by eating a healthy diet, avoiding harmful chemicals, and giving it the best nutritional support possible. Learn about what your liver does for you as well as what you can do for your liver in the form of healthy eating, keeping fit, energy conservation as well as maintaining a positive attitude. However, a combination approach, that includes nutritional remedies with specific herbs, can contribute to the restoration of a healthy balance within the body.

Diet

The typical American diet does not provide the extraordinarily important B-Vitamins which are crucial to daily functioning. Health practitioners recommend a diet centered on whole foods, with fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains being emphasized.

community trust credit union

Maintain a healthy diet by cutting back on alcohol consumption, exercise regularly to maintain healthy weight, supplement your diets with herbs & vitamins for a comprehensive herbal liver detox. It is believed that diets containing 30-35% non-vegetable fats promote both liver and heart health.

The combined fibers of rice, alfalfa, barley and high pectin apple fiber combine to gently “sweep” the lining of the intestinal tract, helping to eliminate both dietary toxins and carcinogens. Although fats are a good energy source, they are difficult for the liver to process, and the total fat in your diet should be moderate.

Cleansing

Antioxidants not only help the liver carry out its cleansing processes, but they also serve to protect the liver from excessive free radical damage. Additionally, supplements recommended in the liver cleansing treatment, such as milk thistle can help to support your liver functions. Although carrots are not a green vegetable, vitamins and minerals found in carrots are a very important in the cleansing factor. You should also look into cleansing the colon, lungs, and cardiovascular system every so often to get a full body cleanse.

Conclusion

A healthy liver is very important to a person overall wellness and optimum health. Physical exercise and diaphragmatic deep breathing are critical to lymph cleansing and to healthy immune response. An unhealthy liver can lead to weight gain, fatigue, poor complexion, and can complicate other health concerns. In promoting liver care, a healthy, balanced diet is always first and foremost.

Kelly Price asked:

It was given to British children as a supplement during the war due to its high vitamin content for its overall health benefits and was a grandmothers favourite today, new research shows that it also combats and reduces depression.

The supplement is:

Cod liver oil – and it works due to high concentration of omega 3 fatty acids, which are a major component of cod liver oil.

Omega 3 has great overall health benefits anyway and is said to help in terms of improving brain power reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes and protecting against other diseases such as cancer.

Now doctors are seeing its benefits to naturally cure depression.

A recent test looked at studying the health benefits of over 20,000 patients over the age of 40 and showed that those patients that rarely or only had marginal omega 3 consumption suffered more from: Depression, stress and anxiety.

Those who consumed cod lever oil regularly, were 30% less likely to suffer from depression.

The test was carried out by Haukland University Hospital – Bergen in Norway.

The conclusion was, that it was the omega 3 component that made the difference between the subjects of the test in terms of their likelihood to suffer the blues.

Getting Sufficient Omega 3

Of course, you can get omega 3 by consuming 3 – 4 portions of oily fish per week such as:

Mackerel, sardines, trout and salmon, but the majority of people simply don’t consume enough.

The recommended daily dosage is 0.5 mgs per day and if you don’t consume a lot of oily fish, take an omega 3 supplement such as cod liver oil.

You Are What You Eat

You are what you eat and your mental and physical wellbeing is affected by the fuel you give your body.

There are a number of foods you can take that will make you feel better and omega 3 is just one of them, that can help combat depression ( see our other articles for more foods to fight the blues ) and also have a positive affect on overall health.

Another benefit is that a supplement such as cod liver oil can not only provide immense health benefits, but its cheap to.

Graeme Lanham asked:

Your heart and brain depend on Omega 3 fatty acids to function effectively and the 2 important fatty acids, DHA and EPA, come from fish, particularly salmon. But not all salmon have sufficient quantities of these important nutrients. Why is this so?

The difference depends on whether the salmon is wild from the ocean or farm raised. Wild salmon feed on their natural diet

of algae and wild shrimp. As a result, their flesh contains large amounts of these 2 fatty acids. .

Farm raised salmon have no access to their natural diet. They are fed cereal grains and this changes their physiology. Their flesh simply doesn’t have the omega 3s that wild salmon does because cereal grains prevent the natural production of omega 3s. In fact wild salmon have 33% more omega 3s than farm raised salmon.

If you are unsure whether your salmon is wild or farm raised, an option is to use fish oil capsules. At least you will have some control over what you eat because it should be clearly shown on the label. Make sure the label clearly states that it is sourced from wild fish and is regularly tested for mercury, heavy metals and pesticides.

One of the easiest, most reliable ways to get the omega 3s you need is to have a daily teaspoon of cod liver oil. DHA is one of the primary ingredients of cod liver oil and The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported a study that showed taking cod liver oil dramatically reduced the levels of dangerous triglyceride fats in the blood.

Cod liver oil not only contains large amounts of omega 3 fatty acids, but also vitamins A and K and the sunlight vitamin D., essential vitamins that are hard to obtain in sufficient amounts in the modern diet. Vitamin D is particularly important for those who receive little sun exposure or are confined indoors.

In an article written for The Weston A Price Foundation, Krispin Sullivan CN notes that cod liver oil greatly improves heart function to prevent heart disease and to treat it even in advanced stages, after a heart attack and after heart surgery.

Cod liver oil alters the linings of the arteries in such a way as to improve healing after damage. This is attributed to the omega 3 fatty acids, but vitamins A, D and K all have important roles to play in improving mineral absorption, improving muscle function and supporting elasticity of the blood vessels.

Finally, here’s good news if you are worried about your weight. Fish oil contains poly-unsaturated fatty acids. These fatty acids actually increase your body metabolism and the burning of undesirable body fat. Fish oil has been shown in clinical trials to actually promote weight loss, so it is a great idea to add it to your diet, particularly if you are trying to lose weight.
